Sandy Utah Venturer Scouts Offer Free Rock Climbing at Recruiting Event

Sandy, Utah (PRWEB) October 20, 2007 -- When your teens tell you the reason they spend hours on end playing video games and hanging out at the mall is that they are bored, perhaps it is time to consider high adventure scouting.

A free night of rock climbing is being offered by BSA Venturer Crew 2179 on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dimple Dell Recreation Center at 10670 South 1000 East in Sandy to enable teens and their parents to learn about Crew 2179. Parents must attend in order to sign a permission slip for their son to climb.

"Thousands of boys in Utah would love to participate in high adventure activities, if only they knew how and where to get involved. Many participated in Boy Scouts, but as they grew older they stopped because that program is not geared towards high adventure," said David Bresnahan, who started Crew 2179 in 2000.

High adventure includes many exciting outdoor activities such as backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, scuba, white water, sailing, boating, canoeing, shooting sports, snow sports, mountain biking, horseback riding, caving and many more. "We've done some really incredible things that I could have never done if it was not for Crew 2179," said Tyler Willis, 19, who is getting ready to leave on an LDS mission. "The crew has explored caves, gone backpacking to remote arches few people ever get to see, backpacked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, rock climbing, fly fishing, shooting, and a 12-day trek to Philmont in New Mexico."

Bresnahan says the boys join because of the cool activities, but parents love the side benefits that come from participation.

"Parents are amazed that their boys quickly develop a higher level of confidence, self-worth, and tend to do better in school. They mature and grow as a person, and have opportunities for service to others and leadership training. Plus it gives them a group of friends who have high standards and ideals," said Bresnahan.

Parents must attend to sign a permission slip and are invited to meet adult leaders from the crew and the Great Salt Lake Council, the sponsor of the event, while the boys have fun climbing.

The climbing activity will be under the direction of Mike Bresnahan, a member of Crew 2179 and a popular climbing instructor from Camp Steiner this past summer.
